HAKODATE HOTEL COMPARISON · CHECKED 8 OCTOBER 2026
Two Hakodate hotels, two tempting breakfasts. The useful question is what happens around them: your walk with luggage, your evening by the waterfront, and the bath you actually booked.
Choose La Vista Hakodate Bay for a Bay Area stay built around seafood breakfast and waterfront sightseeing. Choose Century Marina Hakodate if an easier walk from JR Hakodate Station and its high-floor spa matter more. If you want a private onsen, compare specific Century Marina rooms rather than the cheapest hotel rate.

- Train arrival + shorter luggage walk: start with Century Marina Hakodate.

Breakfast: seafood buffet or a different morning altogether?
La Vista: a clear match for a seafood-bowl breakfast
La Vista’s Kita No Banya offers a breakfast buffet built around Hokkaido ingredients, including seafood you can add to your own rice bowl and grilled dishes. The published hours are 6:30–10:00, with last orders at 9:30; the hotel notes seasonal changes. Official breakfast details.
I would shortlist it for travelers who want hotel breakfast to be one of their Hakodate experiences. A breakfast-included rate makes sense when you have time to sit down and enjoy it. It is less compelling if your plan already includes a large Morning Market breakfast.
Century Marina: check which breakfast your rate includes
Century Marina’s official breakfast page describes two options. The YUUYOO TERRACE buffet focuses on vegetables, brown rice and Hokkaido ingredients; its listed hours are 6:30–11:00, with final entry at 10:30. The separate Irori breakfast at Kita No Ji features charcoal-grilled ingredients and pot-cooked rice. It is limited to 50 guests a day and has earlier published finishing times.
“Breakfast included” does not tell you which experience you are buying. If the Irori breakfast is the attraction, confirm the venue and meal plan before paying. Official breakfast options.
- Want a seafood-bowl buffet? La Vista is a straightforward shortlist.
- Interested in Century Marina’s Irori breakfast? Compare the specific meal plan.
- Staying two nights? Consider one hotel breakfast and one market morning.
- Do not choose on an old “Japan’s No. 1 breakfast” claim alone; menus and rankings change.
Location: the luggage walk is the clearest difference
La Vista publishes an approximately 15-minute walk from JR Hakodate Station. Century Marina publishes approximately five minutes. For a short stay with large suitcases, that difference is a practical reason to choose Century Marina—not just a number on a map.
La Vista’s Bay Area location is the stronger starting point if your evening is about the waterfront and Red Brick Warehouse area. Century Marina puts more emphasis on station and Morning Market access. Neither choice removes the need to plan your journey to Mt. Hakodate.
For one night arriving and departing by train, I would start with Century Marina. For a slower Bay Area stay, I would compare La Vista first. These are itinerary-based recommendations, not claims about room quality or service.

Onsen: both have shared baths; private bathing needs a room decision
La Vista’s shared natural hot-spring facilities are on the 13th floor, with indoor and open-air bathing. Its official page lists hours of 15:00–10:00 the following morning. La Vista onsen details.
Century Marina lists its main spa on the 14th floor and its open-air Infinity Spa on the 15th. Published hours are 5:30–00:30. For a late return from sightseeing, compare the closing times with your actual schedule. Century Marina spa details.
If shared bathing is part of the fun, either hotel belongs on your shortlist. If you want to bathe privately as a couple or family, the shared spa does not solve that requirement. A regular guest-room bathtub is also a different feature from a private onsen.
If private bathing and a Japanese dinner are your main priorities, read our Hakodate luxury ryokan guide for the Yunokawa alternatives and evening-planning advice.
Rooms: compare the bathroom as well as the beds
At La Vista, similar room names hide different bathrooms
- Standard Twin: 25 m², capacity two, shower booth.
- Deluxe Twin: 34 m², capacity three, separate bath, toilet and washbasin.
- Japanese-Western Room: 34 m², capacity four, separate bath, toilet and washbasin.
For a family needing a bathtub, the Standard Twin is not an equivalent substitute for the larger categories. Capacity also does not establish the exact sleeping setup for each child; confirm bedding when you enter ages. La Vista room specifications.
At Century Marina, a higher floor does not automatically mean a private onsen
The current Japanese room page distinguishes Standard and Premiere categories with shower booths from Royal Floor rooms with natural-hot-spring view baths. For example, the Marina King is listed at 42.4 m² for up to two guests, while the Family Suite is 58.1 m² for up to four.
The Residence Floor also adds choices: its Japanese-Western room is listed at 47 m² for three to five guests, while the Marina Sauna Suite explicitly lists natural hot-spring bathing and a sauna. These are different room products, not features of every Century Marina booking. Century Marina room specifications.
- Two people using the shared onsen: compare a La Vista Standard Twin with a Century Marina Twin on the same dates.
- Four guests needing a regular bathtub: investigate La Vista’s Japanese-Western Room and Century Marina’s Residence Japanese-Western category.
- Two people wanting a private onsen: start with Century Marina’s Marina King, then compare other explicitly named onsen rooms.
Links open the hotel listings. Select the exact category, guest ages and breakfast plan; the displayed starting price may be for a different room.
Which is better value? Compare the same stay
I would not give either hotel a permanent price advantage. Rates depend on dates, occupancy, room category, meal plan and cancellation terms.
- Use the same dates and every guest’s real age.
- Compare breakfast with breakfast, or room-only with room-only.
- Check beds, bathroom type and any promised view.
- Compare the final total, taxes and cancellation deadline—not only the first price shown.
If two suitable rooms cost about the same, choose by the itinerary: a shorter station walk at Century Marina, or the Bay Area base at La Vista. Pay extra for a private onsen only when you intend to use it.
Do not confuse La Vista Hakodate Bay with ANNEX
La Vista Hakodate Bay ANNEX is a separate property. This comparison covers La Vista Hakodate Bay at 12-6 Toyokawa-cho. Do not transfer ANNEX’s room, meal or bathing information to the main hotel. Check the full property name on your booking screen. Official ANNEX website.
My pick for four common Hakodate trips
- One night, train arrival, large luggage: Century Marina is my first shortlist.
- Bay Area sightseeing and a seafood breakfast: La Vista is my first shortlist.
- A special occasion with private hot-spring bathing: compare Century Marina’s onsen room categories.
- A ryokan dinner as the main event: compare the Yunokawa options in our Hakodate luxury ryokan guide.

Frequently asked questions
Which is closer to Hakodate Station?
Century Marina: about five minutes on foot, versus about 15 minutes for La Vista, according to their official access information.
Which has the better breakfast?
There is no universal winner. La Vista is a clear seafood-buffet choice; Century Marina offers a buffet and a separate Irori breakfast. This guide compares their documented options rather than claiming a firsthand taste-test winner.
Does either hotel have a private onsen?
Century Marina documents private hot-spring baths in specified categories. Check the exact room name. La Vista’s shared rooftop baths do not mean its standard rooms have private onsens.
Is breakfast always included?
Check your selected rate. A hotel’s breakfast facilities are not proof that your reservation includes the meal, or that every child is covered.
