KANBAYASHI ONSEN · NAGANO · ROOM-FIRST TRAVEL
Two exceptional ryokan.
Very different rooms.
Choosing between Kanbayashi Senjukaku and Jinpyokaku Honten? The useful comparison is the room you can actually book: Western beds or futons, an indoor spring or a semi-open-air bath, and dinner in a private or semi-private setting.

THE QUICK ANSWER
Choose Senjukaku’s 114 m² Special Room with Outdoor Onsen if Western beds and a private outdoor hot spring are both essential. Choose Jinpyokaku’s Kizan or Kogyo for a two-person Japanese-style stay with a semi-open-air cypress spring—provided you are comfortable with futon sleeping.
For four guests: start with Senjukaku’s Onsen Room A or Jinpyokaku’s Kyorai, then confirm the exact bedding and the selected rate’s occupancy. Avoid Jinpyokaku’s Kokko if your priority is an in-room natural onsen: its own bath is not hot-spring water.
Senjukaku vs Jinpyokaku Honten: which room fits your trip?
Both are in Kanbayashi Onsen, near the forest approach to Snow Monkey Park. Decide by your sleeping and bathing requirements before comparing prices. Paying more for the ryokan name alone does not guarantee a private onsen in your room.
On a phone, swipe the table horizontally. Room cards below provide the full detail.
| Your priority | Senjukaku shortlist | Jinpyokaku shortlist |
|---|---|---|
| Western beds + outdoor onsen | 114 m² Special Room: two Western beds; outdoor and indoor springs | Kizan/Kogyo: semi-open-air spring, but an Agoda futon category |
| Two-person private spring | Onsen Room B, 64 m²: indoor spring; no Western beds | Kizan/Kogyo: cypress semi-open-air spring; official capacity 1–2 |
| Family or group space | Onsen Room A, 82 m²: official capacity 2–5 | Kyorai: indoor + outdoor baths; official capacity 2–8, but OTA limits can be lower |
| Beds without paying for a room spring | Modern Japanese-style Bed Room, 50 m²: two Simmons beds | Do not infer beds from an Agoda “Twin” label; inspect the bedding line |
| A small historic inn | Compare the precise room amenities rather than assuming the same experience | Six individually named rooms across four buildings |
| A room to avoid for private onsen | Standard, Modern or Hanare unless the room’s water source is explicitly confirmed | Kokko: private unit bath is explicitly not an onsen |

Senjukaku rooms: choose the bath first, then the bedding
Senjukaku’s official booking categories distinguish ordinary Japanese rooms, rooms with a natural spring, and a special room with an outdoor spring. The English labels below are explanatory translations; retain the Japanese name when asking the hotel to confirm a booking.
Source: Senjukaku official booking room list. Room specifications were checked in indexed official booking information; the live hotel website could not be loaded during research. Current plan details require reconfirmation.
Special Room with Outdoor Onsen
温泉露天付き特別室 · 114 m² · 2–6 guests · two Western beds
Bath: Natural spring in both an outdoor cypress bath and an indoor granite bath.
Book it when: You want Western beds and an outdoor spring together. For more than two guests, confirm the additional sleeping arrangements; an OTA sofa-bed label is not enough.
Onsen Room A
温泉付客室A · 82 m² · 2–5 guests · 12.5 + 9.5 tatami · no Western beds
Bath: Private source-fed hot-spring bath; an outdoor bath is not specified.
Book it when: Your family needs more Japanese-style living space and accepts futons. Confirm bedding for each child and adult.
Onsen Room B
温泉付客室B · 64 m² · 1–2 guests · 10 + 4 + 6 tatami · no Western beds
Bath: Private source-fed hot-spring bath; do not treat it as the outdoor-bath special room.
Book it when: Two people want a room spring without needing Western beds or an outdoor tub.
Modern Japanese-style Bed Room
モダン和室ベットスタイル · 50 m² · official capacity 1–2 · two Simmons beds
Bath: An in-room natural spring is not confirmed for this category.
Book it when: Beds matter more than an exclusive room spring. Ask about reserving a separate private bath and whether your rate includes its use.
Main Building Japanese Room
本館和室 · 50 m² · Agoda lists four futons / up to four adults; official capacity not independently confirmed
Bath: Do not assume the room’s bathroom is natural hot-spring water.
Book it when: You prefer tatami sleeping and shared bathing. Verify the selected rate’s guest limit and meals.
Hanare (Detached Room)
離れ · 54 m² · official capacity two · no Western beds
Bath: Room bath water source was not confirmed in the official excerpt reviewed.
Book it when: A quieter garden-oriented room is your priority. Do not pay a private-onsen premium without written confirmation of the bath.

The official English site gives room layouts in tatami rather than total square metres. We preserve those layouts instead of converting them into an estimated floor area. Western beds and exact futon counts are not specified on every official room page; the bedding shown on your chosen rate still needs checking.
Kizan (驥山) / Kogyo (廣業)
Each: 10 + 6 tatami · official capacity 1–2 · renovated 2015
Bath: A private semi-open-air cypress natural hot spring. These are two named rooms, sometimes sold as a combined OTA category.
Book it when: A couple wants the semi-open-air cypress experience and is comfortable sleeping on futons. Agoda’s named Kizan/Kogyo category lists two futons; request a specific room if it matters.
Kyorai (去来)
12 + 8 tatami · official capacity 2–8 · ground-floor room
Bath: Indoor and outdoor baths. Confirm the exact water-source wording on the booked category if that is a deciding requirement.
Book it when: A family or group needs two substantial tatami spaces and its own outdoor bath. Some Agoda listings allow six rather than eight; the selected rate’s limit controls your booking.
Nyusho (入勝)
10 + 6 tatami · official capacity 1–6 · ground floor
Bath: An indoor ancient-cypress natural hot spring. It is not the Kizan/Kogyo semi-open-air category.
Book it when: Indoor bathing and a larger official capacity are useful to you. Ask how many futons your rate supplies before booking a family stay.
Futarishizuka (二人静)
8 + 6 tatami + study · official capacity 1–2
Bath: An ancient-cypress in-room bath; an outdoor bath is not advertised. The room page does not explicitly identify the water source.
Book it when: A couple values the historic special-room setting and study space. Confirm spring water if essential; do not assume a larger group fits from an OTA bedding count.
Kokko (国光)
10 + 6 tatami · second floor · occupancy needs confirmation
Bath: Ordinary unit bath: the official site explicitly says it is not hot-spring water. Shared onsen facilities are separate.
Book it when: You are happy using the shared springs and do not need a private natural onsen. The official facilities list says one guest, while the description also mentions two: obtain confirmation.
For Kogyo specifically, see its official room page. Romanisation can vary: Kogyo/Kougyou and Nyusho/Nyuushou refer to the same Japanese names, not extra room categories.

These labels appeared in indexed Agoda listings, not a guarantee of current inventory. Agoda can show different supplier names for the same property, and an additional Jinpyokaku listing exists. Treat the following as a cross-check, not an automatic one-to-one mapping.
Swipe sideways on mobile. “Possible” means the hotel should confirm the match.
| Agoda label / specification | Official category | Confidence and booking check |
|---|---|---|
| Senjukaku “Superior Suite with Open-Air Bath”, 114 m² | 114 m² Special Room with Outdoor Onsen | Likely. Match size + outdoor bath + two beds. Additional bedding differs between descriptions. |
| Senjukaku “MODERN JAPANESE STYLE ROOM”, 50 m², two single beds | Modern Japanese-style Bed Room | Likely. Official capacity 1–2; an indexed OTA limit of three conflicts. Confirm before adding a third guest. |
| Senjukaku “Superior Twin Room”, 54 m², two futons | Possibly Hanare, 54 m² | Unconfirmed. “Twin” does not prove Western beds or a room spring. |
| Senjukaku “Japanese-style Room with Indoor Hot Spring Bath (Main Building)” | Possibly Onsen Room A or B | Ambiguous. Look for 82 m²/A or 64 m²/B; the bath wording alone cannot identify it. |
| Jinpyokaku “Japanese-style Room with Semi Open-air Cypress Bath (Kizan/Kogyo Type)” | Kizan or Kogyo | Named-category match. Usually a choice of the two, not a guaranteed specific room. Indexed bedding: two futons. |
| Jinpyokaku “Japanese-style Room with Open-air Bath (Kyorai Type)” | Kyorai | Named-category match. Indexed maximum six vs official room capacity eight; do not override the rate’s limit. |
| Jinpyokaku named Nyusho / Futarishizuka / Kokko types | The corresponding Japanese room name | Check the supplier. These appear in an additional listing. Kokko’s modular bath is not an onsen. |
| Jinpyokaku generic “Deluxe Twin Room” or “Modern Japanese Room” | No verified named-room match | Unconfirmed. Ask which named room is supplied and whether bedding is futons. |
Before payment, save the rate’s exact room name, occupancy, bath description, meal inclusions and cancellation terms. If the name is generic, ask the hotel to confirm the Japanese category in writing. Do not infer total floor area from an OTA’s tatami-room measurement.
Dinner, private baths and Snow Monkey Park access
Senjukaku: check your meal plan
Official booking information describes seasonal kaiseki-style meals. Onsen Room A/B and special-room plans specify a private dining setting; ordinary main-building and Hanare plans use a dining area. Confirm that arrangement on your chosen Agoda rate.
Some official plans ask guests to arrive by 18:00 and list dinner at 18:00 or 18:30. Treat these as plan-specific conditions, not a universal late-arrival promise. Room-only or breakfast-only rates do not include dinner.
Jinpyokaku: semi-private dining
The current official cuisine page describes seasonal Shinshu kaiseki and breakfast. Meals are served at Sekka-tei in the annex, in a semi-private setting. This does not establish in-room dining or a fully enclosed private dining room.
Check both dinner and breakfast are included in the rate, the latest arrival time and dietary accommodation before paying. Older guides use other dining-room names; this comparison follows the current official page.
In-room spring vs a separate reservable bath
Senjukaku’s official plans describe two reservable private-bath facilities, each with indoor and outdoor bathing. Reservations are first-come, made after arrival; some plans include a free session. Do not assume every Agoda rate includes it. Ask about the current fee, session length and booking procedure.
Jinpyokaku’s official spring page lists gender-separated indoor bathing and a mixed-gender outdoor bath. A shared mixed bath is not an exclusive couple’s bath. We did not confirm a separate reservable family-bath service, so ask the hotel if you need one.
Jinpyokaku’s official shared hot-spring facilities →
Access: nearby does not mean you can skip the forest walk
Both inns are in Kanbayashi Onsen. The official park guide gives about 30 minutes from the Kanbayashi approach and about 35 minutes from the Snow Monkey Park bus-stop route. Jinpyokaku itself advertises a roughly 30-minute walk. Allow extra time in snow or ice; the uneven trail is unsuitable for wheelchairs and carts.
Jinpyokaku: its official access page requires advance reservation for a Yudanaka Station shuttle. Pickup times and charges were not confirmed. Senjukaku: Agoda lists shuttle service, but current official pickup conditions were not confirmed. Request the meeting point, operating hours, fee and reservation deadline from the hotel. Neither listing proves a ride all the way to the monkeys.
Which room should couples, families and anniversary travellers book?
Couples who want outdoor bathing
Kizan/Kogyo is the shortlist for two people who accept futons and want a semi-open-air cypress spring. Choose Senjukaku’s 114 m² Special Room if Western beds are essential. Compare both rates with the same meal package.
Families of four
Senjukaku Onsen Room A offers 82 m² and an official 2–5-person category. Kyorai offers two tatami spaces plus indoor/outdoor baths. Enter children’s exact ages: physical room capacity does not establish meal charges, futon entitlement or the OTA rate limit.
Anniversary trips
For an outdoor spring and beds, start with Senjukaku’s Special Room. For a historic special-room atmosphere, compare Futarishizuka, accepting its indoor bath and confirming the water source. Do not assume cake, flowers or private dining are included.
Guests who need easier sleeping
Senjukaku’s Modern Bed Room makes beds the priority; reserve a separate private bath if available. If you also need an in-room outdoor spring, consider the Special Room. Ask about stairs and bath access for your exact room before booking.
Before booking: send these five questions to the hotel
- Which named room is this rate? Include the Agoda label and ask for the Japanese official category.
- Is the room’s own bath natural hot-spring water? Ask whether it is indoor, semi-open-air or fully outdoor—and exclusive to the room.
- What bedding will every guest receive? Specify adults, children’s ages and whether you need Western beds or separate futons.
- What meals and dining setting are included? Confirm dinner, breakfast, arrival deadline and whether dining is private, semi-private or communal.
- Can you arrange our transfer? Confirm station, meeting point, time, price and reservation deadline.
Compare the final total for the same dates, guest ages and meal package. Room inventory changes, so we do not publish a fixed nightly price or imply that either property is always cheaper.
Frequently asked questions
Is Senjukaku or Jinpyokaku Honten better for a private onsen?
Choose the room, not just the inn. Senjukaku’s Onsen A/B and outdoor-onsen Special Room are confirmed spring categories. Jinpyokaku’s Kizan/Kogyo offer semi-open-air cypress springs. Kokko’s private bath is explicitly not hot-spring water.
Which room combines Western beds and a private outdoor onsen?
Senjukaku’s 114 m² Special Room with Outdoor Onsen explicitly combines two Western beds with an outdoor cypress spring and an indoor granite spring. Confirm additional bedding if more than two guests will stay.
Does every Jinpyokaku room have a private natural onsen?
No. Kokko has an ordinary unit bath. Do not apply the hotel’s general onsen description to every room. Futarishizuka’s room page names a cypress bath but does not explicitly identify the water source.
Can I reserve Kizan rather than Kogyo on Agoda?
A combined Kizan/Kogyo room category does not guarantee either individual named room. Ask the hotel or booking provider before paying if the exact assignment matters.
Does “Twin Room” mean two Western beds?
Not reliably. Indexed Agoda categories for these properties include twin labels with futon bedding. Read the bedding specification and obtain confirmation rather than relying on the category headline.
Can a family of four stay in one room?
Senjukaku’s Onsen Room A and Jinpyokaku’s Kyorai are useful starting points. Check the selected rate allows your full group, children’s ages, separate bedding and meals. Official room capacity and OTA rate limits can differ.
